There comes an age in a young man’s life where you need to prove yourself; the need to prove your worth amongst the brotherhood of men.
Some cultures will have you survive an ordeal, like wearing fire ant gloves for an hour, bungee jumping, making it through the Agoge System (here’s looking at you Spartans) or having your first drink at the age of 18 or 21 depending on what side of the pond you are. However, none can be more crucial as buying your first time piece. Your watch is a conversation piece, an extension of your personality, and is the defining package that is……YOU!
Now this is my list as of the 1st Quarter 2017 and not a top 10 list of all time (see what I did there?); with that been said let’s get this show on the road. All these are available from the Watch Shop.
I grew up with this brand and if you were a rough kid like me you most likely put your gear through its paces; looking back I am amazed how resilient this brand is. The Fossil Grant is a good pick as it screams elegant with its rose appearance and blue strap. It is Japanese Automatic (powered by movement), water-resistant up to 50 metres (with leather straps don’t see why you’d swim with it). All in all good pick for work and the occasional hang out plus you can’t beat the price.
Now this is for you right hand watch wearers and is the only one of its type on the list. I got an earlier model for my brother-in-law a year ago and he swears by it. He wears his watches on his right hand and this brand grew on him. Quartz battery, stainless steel and water proof for 200 metres this watch can be worn in an array of occasions.
This is a crisp looking watch for all occasions; a good friend of mine only buys Seiko kinetics, however, I convinced him to get a solar power watch and he picked this. He has had this for a while now and he would recommend this line to anyone who wants a solid timepiece. Now this item is on sale for £199 RRP is £250. Its water-resistant up to 100 metres, solar-powered (so need for battery changes) and stainless steel and 2 year Seiko guarantee, so yeah…………get one.
7. THOMAS SABO MEN’S ETERNAL REBEL £315
This is another brand I know a lot of people will vouch for. This watch and a solid but light feel to it; an interesting combo and it feels very natural on the wrist especially when you get the wrist link sized to your specifications. This is water-resistant up to 50 metres, quartz movement and as you can clearly see rose plated get this for the hipster look.
This is a beautiful watch looks good, feels good and it extends that bourgeois aura we all want to exhume once in a while. Swiss quartz, strong leather strap, water-resistant up to 100 metres, with all this you realise it’s not just a pretty face. Original retail price of £575 when this article was written you can get this 33% off maybe more, so yeah………..go get it.
5. TISSOT MEN’S PRC200 CHRONO £292
I remember in secondary school (high school for our neighbours on the other side of the pond) a close friend brought in a Tissot Antimagnetique which was his dad passed down to him. That says a lot about this brand. The above mentioned model comes with a scratch proof face made from sapphire, water proof up to 200 metres you will get your mileage from this watch just remember you will have to change the batter when it dies.
4. BULOVA MEN’S BVA £197.49
Now this brand holds a sentimental spot in my heart. I got a Bulova Blue Marine Star in 2003 and it was $250 (for a student it was a big deal especially if you are work-study) and it served me for years and I still have it. Having said that this is a good pick for the price; simple elegant and high-end name for a steal. Water resistance is questionable but its splash proof, and it’s an automatic.
3. CITIZEN MEN’S CHRONO PERPETUAL A-T ALARM RADIO CONTROLLED ECO-DRIVE £309
Oh thats a mouth full!! So, I am currently wearing the 2014 model; it hasn’t let me down and you know what they say once you go eco you don’t going back. I have been rugged with mine and not a scratch on the face, and minimal on the wrist. The look, feel and weight on this bad boy gives you that confidence you are buying an asset. Water resistant? Check. Scratch proof face? Check. Worth the price? CHECK.
2. MOVADO MEN’S BOLD CHRONOGRAPH £450
I own an old Movado and they make sturdy watches, having said that, you are buying into a heritage. This watch is water-resistant, Swiss battery operated and black ion plated. This a masterpiece to own and can be worn in any occasion.
1. HAMILTON MEN’S JAZZMASTER VIEWMATIC £470
This is a Hamilton they don’t come in less that £500 and still look this stylish to wear. Water resistance to 100 metres, Swiss automatic movement. You are buying a beautiful watch and this is lovely investment. This is the most of the more expensive on the list but for good reason, it’s a HAMILTON need I say more.
There you have it, my top 10 list of watches to buy under £500. I am keen hear from you all, did you find this helpful? Please let me know and leave your comments.
